A Hero from Peshawar: Asif Bashir Honored by India

This Republic Day, India will welcome a special guest from Pakistan: Asif Bashir, a resident of Peshawar. He will be bestowed with one of the prestigious civilian awards in India, the “Jeevan Rakshak Padak,” for his daring act of valour last year when he rescued 44 Hajj Yatris including 24 Indians. This award will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu honoring his exceptionally commendable performance in Hajj 2024.

A Selfless Act of Courage

Asif Bashir volunteered during last year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia, where pilgrims faced a severe heat wave from June 22 to 27. Some of the consequences on health by extreme weather was that many people were affected by illnesses. At this stage, Bashir himself was able to treat and assist approximately 350 minority pilgrims. The most heroic of these was the time he took it on himself to single-handedly evacuate 50 very seriously ill pilgrims that the medical team categorized as critical. Bashir had to carry these individuals for almost two kilometres to get to a medical centre and save 44 lives.

Unfortunately, the government of this country of Pakistan still is not aware of the heroism of Asif Bashir, and the concern shall be raised in connection with the analysis of such brave deeds in the state.

Recognition Beyond Borders

Asif Bashir will be the second person from Peshawar to receive a civilian award from India, following Abdul Ghaffar Khan. When accepting the award, Asif Bashir left no one in doubt that this is humanity’s award not nationality. He said, “This award is for all of Pakistan.” I have acted on the basis of humanization and ignoring people’s identity and nationality. It is a proud moment for all Pakistanis when one of their own is shown such respect in India by being presented as a state guest.

Besides India, the British government has commended Bashir and recommended him for the King Gallantry Award for his bravery in emergencies. Asif Bashir’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of selfless acts across borders.
