Gomoh: The Last Stop of Netaji’s Great Escape

Gomoh in Jharkhand holds a significant place in India’s freedom struggle, as it was the last location where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose stood before starting his mission for India’s independence. Prime Minister Narendra Modi explained this correlation in the 118th edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday. He also described ‘The Great Escape’ and enlightened others about the fearless war of Netaji.

The Great Escape

PM Modi narrated his experience and how in January during world war II, Kolkata was charged with Police forces, especially a particular house. In this confusion, a man in a brown coat, pant and a black hat sneaked out late at night. He dodged multiple checkpoints and made his way to Gomoh station in Jharkhand. Following that, he boarded a train and to get through Afghanistan to Europe, while avoiding the vigilance of the British Empire.

As PM Modi pointed out, this amazing story relates the incredible heroism of Netaji. The day, January 23, marked his birth anniversary, is the ‘Parakram Diwas’ to commemorate his gallantry.

A Daring Plan

Jumping forth to 18th January 1941, one of the most daring episodes of the struggle for India’s independence. While under house arrest in Kolkata, this unpredictable leader put into motion the plan to escape. Posing as a Pathan and with his nephew, Dr. Shishir Bose, he fled his home in a Wanderer car. By evening, he reached the residence of his lawyer friend, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, in Gomoh.

Sheikh Abdullah helped prepare a Pathan outfit for Netaji, and Amin Tailor escorted him to Gomoh station at 1 a.m. There, he booked Howrah-Peshawar Mail, which was renamed as Netaji Express in 2021. He traveled in this train till Delhi and then to Peshawar thus escaping from the British police.

To honor Netaji’s legacy, Gomoh station was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Junction in 2009, featuring a life-sized bronze statue and a plaque narrating his escape story. Today, Gomoh Junction stands as a symbol of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s courage, inspiring future generations to remember his relentless fight for freedom and justice.
