Abdul Baten: From Rural to National Volleyball Star

Rural Assam is passionate about volleyball, and Nagarbera in Kamrup district is a prime example. One young child, Abdul Baten, discovered his calling among the excited villagers watching local volleyball legends like Mohammad Sadique and Swakshar Talukdar play. Abdul Baten’s passion for the sport grew during the Bhakhuradia village games, inspiring him to represent his state at the national level.

Born in Bhakhuradia hamlet on August 1, 1997, Baten began volleyball under Coach Nabir Hussain. Baten’s enthusiasm for the game grew daily as he heard roaring audiences and saw seasoned professionals. Encouraged by his parents and driven by his ambition, he started for glory.

Rise to Fame:

Coaches Ganesh Sarma, Manoj Dey, and Pradeep Sarma saw Baten’s passion and skill. They helped him improve and become a powerful player. From representing Guwahati in inter-district games to establishing his impact in national-level events, Baten’s career was distinguished by a tireless quest of perfection.

His breakthrough came in the 2011-12 rural tournament in Kolkata, when the Assam team’s runner-up result rocketed Baten into the limelight. Fuelled by this triumph, he proceeded to succeed, representing Assam in other national events, including the Junior National Volleyball Championship in Chandigarh in 2014.

Pinnacle of Success:

Baten’s biggest performance came in the historic 2020 Senior National Volleyball Championship, when he played a crucial part in Assam’s extraordinary voyage to the final. This astounding performance not only brought pride to the state but also gained a coveted position for Assam in the renowned Federation Cup volleyball competition for the first time.

As Baten trains up for the 2018 Senior National Volleyball Championship, his unflinching commitment and indomitable spirit continue to inspire a new generation of players. With each strong smash and intelligent play, he not only represents his state but also exemplifies the long history of passion and endurance in the arena of Assamese volleyball.
