Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed’s Journey to Global Recognition

Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed, born in Dhubri district of Assam, has been named one of the world’s top 2% scientists by Stanford University for the fifth time in a row. This 35-year-old assistant professor at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has overcome many challenges to reach this position.

Coming from a big family with limited means, Ahmed studied in government schools and worked as a tutor to support himself. He completed his BSc from Bhola Nath College, Dhubri, and later did his MSc and PhD from Guwahati University. His teachers, especially ‘Zaman Sir’ and Dr. D. Sharma, inspired him to pursue a career in science.

 Overcoming Obstacles in Research

Despite facing difficulties in accessing research materials, Ahmed has published over 165 papers in top journals. He relied on open-access journals and Sci-Hub to overcome the lack of subscriptions to paid journals. His work in theoretical physics, especially in general relativity and quantum mechanics, has earned him global recognition.

Ahmed hopes his achievements will inspire youth from his district, where many don’t pursue higher education due to high unemployment rates. He sees himself as a potential role model for students from Dhubri.

Continuing Pursuit of Excellence

While working at USTM, a private university, Ahmed continues to strive for a position in a government institution. He has cleared the UGC-NET twice but is yet to secure a government job. Despite this, he remains positive about his future prospects.

USTM, under the leadership of Mahbubul Hoque, has been supporting Ahmed’s research. The university has a diverse student body and has secured NIRF ranking for three consecutive years. Ahmed’s global recognition not only highlights his brilliance but also puts USTM on the map as a hub for scientific research and innovation.
