Four Friends Rediscover the Royal Tanga Rides in Srinagar

The Royal Tanga, a horse-drawn carriage, was once a symbol of royal elegance and pride in Nawabi cities. In the past, it served as a primary means of transportation, especially in rural areas where other vehicles were scarce. People cherished the experience of traveling in a Tanga, enjoying the gentle sway of the carriage as it moved along the roads. This mode of transport was not just about getting from one place to another; it was a way to connect with the community and the beautiful surroundings. However, as modern transportation options became more prevalent, the Tanga gradually faded from everyday life, becoming a rare sight on the streets.

The Allure of Kashmir

Kashmir is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, featuring lush valleys, sparkling lakes, and majestic snow-capped mountains. These breathtaking landscapes draw tourists from around the globe, eager to experience the region’s charm. To enhance the experience for visitors in Srinagar, local youth have revived the Tanga, offering horse carriage rides through the picturesque streets. Riding a Tanga allows tourists to immerse themselves in the beauty of the city while enjoying a nostalgic journey that harkens back to simpler times.

The Inspiration Behind the Revival

About five years ago, a group of four friends—Aamir, Momin, Imtiaz and Adil saw an opportunity to bring the Tanga back to life in Srinagar. They were inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of the local bakarwals, who often traveled with their horses. Recognizing the potential for a unique tourist attraction, they decided to create a new experience for visitors. They began by offering rides on the first Tanga, which quickly gained popularity among locals and tourists alike. The friends worked hard to establish their business, often waking up early to prepare for the day ahead.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Success

Starting the Tanga business was not without its challenges. The friends faced skepticism from family members who worried about the financial risks involved. Despite their concerns, the group believed in the potential success of their venture. They sought support from the government, which provided assistance in getting their project off the ground. Although there were moments of doubt and setbacks, including a temporary halt to the project due to the hard work required, the friends remained committed to their vision. They faced financial difficulties and had to navigate local challenges, but their determination paid off.

The friends have established a schedule, operating from eight in the morning until ten in the evening, offering rides at various prices depending on the route. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people eager to experience the royal charm of the Tanga.

Unique Experience for Tourists
