From Lehal Village to a Sacred Shrine
Where this magnificent gurdwara stands today, there was once a small village called Lehal. The area was peaceful and lush green, known for its clean water and modest agriculture. A resident of the village, Bhai Bhag Ram, learned that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji had arrived nearby in Saifabad. With great humility and devotion, he requested Guru Sahib to visit his village as well.
Guru Sahib accepted the request and spent some time in Lehal. Seeing the beautiful natural surroundings, pure water, and shade of trees, Guru Sahib chose to reside there for some time. Bhai Bhag Ram bowed at his feet and submitted that people were unable to settle there permanently. Guru Sahib blessed the place, saying that one day it would become a thriving and vibrant settlement. Today, that blessing has come true. Patiala is now a renowned city of Punjab, and Gurdwara Sri Dukh Niwaran Sahib is known across the country and abroad. Devotees from far and wide come daily to seek blessings.
Bibi Karmo’s Prayer and the Glory of the Sarovar
A woman from Lehal village, Bibi Karmo, came to seek Guru Sahib’s blessings. With a sorrowful heart, she prayed that she had been unable to bear children, and that a serious illness spreading in the village was causing the deaths of children. Guru Sahib compassionately blessed the place, saying that whoever bathes here with faith will be freed from bodily ailments, and whoever connects with the Guru’s Word will be relieved of mental suffering. These words became a source of great hope for the devotees. After this compassionate blessing, the place came to be known as “Dukh Niwaran,” meaning “Remover of Suffering.” Even today, devotees bathe in the sacred sarovar with deep faith and experience the Guru’s grace.
Dukh Niwaran Sahib Today – Facilities and Service
Today, Gurdwara Sri Dukh Niwaran Sahib stands in a beautiful and expansive form. Every arrangement has been made for the comfort of visiting devotees. There are well-maintained shoe storage areas, and a separate counter for Karah Prasad from where devotees receive the sacred offering. There is also proper accommodation in the sarai for those who wish to stay. Devotees from outside cities often stay here for some time to engage in remembrance and service.
Gurbani kirtan continues throughout the day. Sitting inside the gurdwara and listening to the divine hymns brings profound peace to the mind. The atmosphere is sacred and serene, touching the heart of every visitor.
Faith and Inner Peace
Many devotees believe that when they come here, the burden on their hearts becomes lighter. Those exhausted by life’s struggles find courage and renewed hope at this sacred place. What makes this shrine special is that it offers refuge not only from physical ailments but also from the sorrows of the mind.
