Haaequa Awati: The Hijabi Trekker

Haaequa Awati, known as the Hijabi Trekker, hails from Junnar in Pune, Maharashtra. She is exploring all the forts built by the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Both Haaequa and Shivaji Maharaj were born in Junnar, a city rich in history. Haaequa’s Instagram bio features a quote that reflects her love for nature: “Nature’s path is where the mind finds clarity, the body finds strength, and the heart finds freedom.” Through her trekking adventures, she is creating a unique identity.

Early Life and Inspiration

From a young age, Haaequa was fascinated by forts and the bravery of Shivaji Maharaj. She developed an interest in outdoor sports while in school. Haaequa started practising taekwondo at the age of nine and became the first Muslim woman from Junnar taluka to earn a black belt. Growing up in a village, she felt a strong sense of responsibility for her sisters, which motivated her to learn self-defence. Her father ran a small tailoring business, and her mother was a school teacher. Haaequa is the eldest of three sisters.

Balancing Education and Passion

Haaequa moved to Pune for higher education, where she completed her MBA. Despite the challenges of pursuing education as a woman in her community, she balanced her studies with her love for sports and trekking. She began her trekking journey at Shivneri Fort, built by Shivaji Maharaj. Haaequa has explored many forts, including Torna, Harishchandragad, and Rajmachi. Her travel vlogs have gained popularity on YouTube and Instagram. Encouraged by her mother, who is tech-savvy, Haaequa started her social media channel called “Hizbi Trekker.”

Haaequa aims to showcase the beauty of the Sahyadri mountains and share the culture and history of Maharashtra. She chooses to trek in a hijab to challenge stereotypes about Muslim women. Haaequa believes that religion and culture should not limit one’s ambitions. She emphasises that wearing a hijab is a personal choice and can coexist with pursuing dreams. Her logo, inspired by the Indian tricolour, reflects her respect for her country and her journey as the Hijabi Trekker.
