The International Gita Mahotsav 2024 will take place in Kurukshetra, Haryana, starting on December 28. This year, Tanzania will be the partner country for the event, which marks the 5161st anniversary of the Bhagavad Gita. The festival aims to share the teachings of the Gita with people around the world. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini announced that the celebration will be held with great enthusiasm in the sacred land of Kurukshetra, where the famous Mahabharata war occurred.
Significance of the Gita
The Bhagavad Gita is a vital scripture that helps people navigate moral dilemmas in modern life. Swami Gyanananda emphasised that the Gita offers solutions to today’s conflicts, just as it did for Arjuna during the Mahabharata. The Gita Mahotsav has been celebrated in Kurukshetra since 1989, organised by the Haryana Government and the Kurukshetra Development Board. The festival promotes moral values and cultural revival, aiming to inspire people through the teachings of the Gita.
Events and Participation
The Mahotsav will run for 18 days, ending on December 15. It is expected to attract millions of visitors, with around 45 to 50 lakh people participating last year. Daily Gita Mahabharata will be held at Brahma Sarovar from November 28 to December 15, along with cultural programs at various pilgrimage sites. The festival will officially begin with a Gita Yajna and Pujan on December 5, followed by an International Gita Seminar at Kurukshetra University. Tanzanian ministers are expected to attend, highlighting the strong cultural ties between India and Tanzania. This event will provide a unique opportunity for Tanzanians to learn more about Haryana and its rich heritage.
