Nurul Islam Laskar: A Pioneer of Public Relations in North East India

Nurul Islam Laskar began his journey in public relations (PR) in the 1970s, a time when many people and companies in India did not understand the importance of PR. He started working at the State Bank of India (SBI) as a Probationary Officer in 1972, focusing on traditional banking tasks like deposits and loans. In 1975, SBI sent him to a month-long certificate course on public relations at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong. This course opened his eyes to how PR could improve an organization’s image and the various activities that could be part of PR.

Establishing PR in North East India

After his training, Laskar was put in charge of a new department called “Innovative Banking” at SBI’s Regional Office in Shillong. This department began to take on many PR projects, which were not directly related to banking. At first, his colleagues were skeptical about his work, viewing him as an outsider or a “joker in a circus.” However, as Laskar’s efforts began to show positive results, their opinions changed. He gained respect and became a well-regarded figure among his peers.

Recognition and Continued Passion

Over the years, Laskar established the first PR agency in North East India, named CABSFORD. Now at the age of 75, his passion for promoting the image of Assam and the North East remains strong. Recently, he was honored with the prestigious Chanakya Award for ‘Integral Public Relations’ by the Public Relations Council of India (PRCI). This award, presented by Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik at the 18th Global Communication Conclave in Mangaluru, recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of PR. Laskar’s dedication and hard work have played a significant role in changing the perception of the North East region in India.
