Of Love, Loss, and Light: The Many Lives of Aabid Adeeb

Aabid Adeeb's journey from the streets of Udaipur to the hearts of poetry lovers everywhere is a story of inspiration and hope.

Aabid Adeeb, born on 22 March 1937 in Udaipur, Rajasthan, emerged from the heart of India—a land where poetry is woven into the very fabric of culture. His childhood was innocent, characterized by the smooth beats of a small city and the friendliness of a tiny community. However, beyond this naivety, the heart of young Aabid was untidy; it was in a constant quest for sense and belongingness. His family was not wealthy, but they valued culture and education.

phir mujhe aisa laga
jaise kaghaz par siyahi phailne se
lafz gaDmaD ho gae hon
aaina dhundla gaya ho
jaane pahchane hue sab log
jaise ajnabi se ban gae hon

Aabid Adeeb

He used to listen to the recitation of elders, couplets and stories as a child, and these words buried the initial seeds of poetry in his soul. His earliest lessons happened in the lanes of Udaipur with its lakes and palaces, where he learnt the lessons of beauty and longing and of time passing by. As a boy, Aabid used to scribble lines in his notebook; little did he know that one day, he would be writing something that would touch readers worldwide. It is a saga of how the bylanes of Udaipur and the Urdu poetry world were transformed with the growth of greatness from the most meagre origin.

mere kamre mein paDi
Table ke KHanon se nikal kar
KHat hawa mein uD rahe hon
box mein rakha hua rumal
shoala ban gaya ho
barf ke tudon tale dab kar zehn bhi
munjamid hone ke badle jal raha ho

The Poet: Life and Hardships of Creation

Aabid Adeeb’sAdeeb’s path was not easy. In his youth, he experienced what most dreamers experience: money, social norms, and the fear of being misunderstood. Nevertheless, he denied letting these difficulties break him. Instead, he transformed his sufferings into poems, and his pen became his healing and self-exploration tool. His initial poetry was full of hope and yearning as he experienced emotional turmoil. There was a time when he wrote, ; a line which tells of finding the right way even when others have stumbled.

jahan pahunch ke qadam Dagmagae hain sab ke
usi maqam se ab apna rasta hoga

Aabid Adeeb

Aabid’s poetry became a companion to the writer and helped him go through times of loneliness and confusion. His source of inspiration was daily life around him, the sound of children laughing, the quietness of the night, the life of the ordinary man and his troubles. He did not use big words; instead, his words had the depth of his inner feelings so that everyone could understand his poetry. Through his struggles, Aabid Adeeb learned that true art is born from the heart and that even the darkest nights can give birth to the brightest dawns.

Zamana mujh se juda ho gaya zamana hua,
raha hai ab to bichhadne ko mujh se tu baaqi.

safar mein aise kai marhale bhi aate hain
har ek moD pe kuchh log chhuT jate hain
ye jaan kar bhi ki patthar har ek hath mein hai
jiyale log hain shishon ke ghar banate hain

Aabid Adeeb

Aabid has lost hope and resilience, which he frequently writes about in his poetry. He sings of the heartbreak of parting, the strength to go on, and the necessity to remain oneself. His words can heal, inspire, and cause us to stop and think. But poetry to Aabid was not merely a mode of expression; it was a mode of life, it was a mode of giving meaning to the mess of the world. His poems have remained inspirational and reassuring to people who find hope in the twists and turns of life.

jo rahne wale hain log un ko ghar nahin dete
jo rahne wala nahin us ke ghar banate hain
jinhen ye fikr nahin sar rahe rahe na rahe
wo sach hi kahte hain jab bolne pe aate hain

Untold Stories: Poet as Reformer

Beyond his poetry, Aabid Adeeb’s life holds stories of courage and activism that are rarely told. He led the Dawoodi Bohra reformist movement in Udaipur in the 1950s and 1960s. Having seen what people can do to religion to gain some profits, Aabid and the young reformists established the Saifi Imdadia Committee to assist people in need within their locality. They would gather textbooks to give to students, distribute medicines to people experiencing poverty and promote higher education among the Bohra youth. Religious leaders opposed their work and viewed education and empowerment as threatening their authority.

main apne jism mein kuchh is tarah se bikhra hun
ki ye bhi kah nahin sakta main kaun hun kya hun
unhen KHushi hai isi baat se ki zinda hun
main un ki daen hatheli ki ek rekha hun

Aabid Adeeb

Aabid resisted temptation and pressure and did not bow down to compromise his values even when bribes were offered, and opposition was encountered. His fearlessness encouraged people to follow him in the social justice and reform movement. Aabid and his fellows opposed those elections and defeated the candidates favoured by the religious establishment in the 1970 municipal elections, demonstrating that the people’s will was stronger than any known opposition. These untold stories reveal a side of Aabid Adeeb that goes beyond poetry—a man who used his voice to fight for truth, justice, and the betterment of his community.

main pi gaya hun kai aansuon ke sail-e-rawan
main apne dil ko samundar banae baiTha hun
wo mere dost jo ek ek kar ke dur hue
main un ko aaj bhi apne qarib pata hun

Aabid Adeeb’s poetry is not just about personal emotions but also a mirror of society. He wrote about the common man and his plight, injustice and how it hurts, and the necessity of putting yourself into another man’s shoes.

His iconic sayings–

Amir-e-karvan hai tang hum se,
hamara rasta sab se alag hai

Aabid Adeeb

are about the lonesomeness of the people who intend to follow a different path and the boldness required to walk in solitude.

In another couplet he says,

Jinhen ye fikr nahin sar rahe rahe na rahe,
woh sach hi kahte hain jab bolne pe aate hain.

Aabid used his poetry to break the existing system, challenge those in power, and tell his readers to use their brains. He believed that poetry could be used to do good, to help society wake up its conscience so that it could act. His poems still speak to people searching for justice, equality, and a good world.

The Emotional Heartbeat: Of Love & Loss & Longing

His lines,

Woh mere dost jo ek ek kar ke door hue
Main unko aaj bhi apne qareeb paata hoon

Aabid Adeeb

remind of the pain of falling away from friends yet having them present in the memories. In his poems, Aabid discusses the themes of longing and separation, which may be related to his personal experience of loss and survival.

Safar ka shauq na manzil ki justuju baaqi
Musafiron ke badan mein nahin lahu baaqi

Aabid Adeeb

He knew that life was made of saying goodbye, yet he also knew that each farewell (though it did leave a lesson, a memory and a hope of meeting again). He could capture complicated feelings in simple words, and this helped his poetry connect with people of all origins. For Aabid, every desolation that felt like a far-off possibility would be a chance to grow, get to know oneself better, and find a lovely note to sing even in sorrow. Through his poems, we learn nothing wrong with feeling, mourning, and hoping.

Kabhi jo baat kahi thi tire ta’alluq se
Ab us ke bhi kai matlab nikaale jaate hain
