Professor Suhail Sabir, who recently retired from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), donated Rs 50 lakh to create an endowment fund for scholarships for deserving students. This fund was made possible through contributions from former students and dignitaries, marking the first time a professor has donated part of their retirement benefits in this way.
Dr. Sabir expressed that this donation is his way of giving back to the university and society, driven by his deep emotional connection to AMU. He also wanted to honor the university’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, who was dedicated to providing education for Muslims.
In an interview, Professor Sabir mentioned that he hopes this initiative will bring joy to students. A committee has been established to oversee the distribution of scholarships to those in need. He handed over the cheque to the university’s Finance Officer, Professor M. Mohsin Khan KK, and expressed gratitude for the university’s acceptance of his offer.
Professor Sabir hopes his actions will inspire other retired professors in Aligarh to contribute similarly. He believes that everyone who has benefited from their educational institution should consider giving back.
Shafi Kidwai, a fellow professor, praised Sabir for setting a remarkable example, noting that no other faculty member has made such a significant donation before. Hakeem Syed Zulur Rahman, who has spent decades in Aligarh, also highlighted the uniqueness of this gesture.
Professor Sabir, who has been a supportive and caring teacher, often provided free coaching to struggling students and kept parents informed about their children’s progress. His dedication to helping students reflects the values of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Sabir, originally from Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, has been a part of AMU since his education there, earning a PhD in Chemistry and becoming a professor in 2015.
