Shree Ramkrishna Mahasammelan Samiti Ashram in Kashmir Supports Farmers and Preserves Culture

Shree Ramkrishna Mahasammelan Samiti Ashram in South Kashmir, founded by a disciple of Swami Vivekananda, has been helping local Muslim farmers grow apples and walnuts using modern farming techniques. The Shree Ramkrishna Mahasammelan Samiti Ashram (SRMA) is located in Nangdandi village, near the Achabal resort in Anantnag district. Established 87 years ago by Swami Ashokananda, the Ashram aims to promote Sanatan Dharma and provide human services. Despite facing challenges during the insurgency in the region, the Ashram has continued its work without any major disturbances.

Support for Local Farmers

Brij Lal Bhat, the Chairman of the Ashram’s Administrative Committee, explained that the Ashram has developed a high-density apple orchard. This orchard not only generates revenue for the Ashram but also serves as a demonstration site for local farmers. They are encouraged to visit the Ashram to learn about the modern techniques used in apple farming. Bhat, who is an agricultural expert and retired from the J&K government, emphasizes the importance of using unproductive land for fruit farming. The Ashram has also introduced a high-density walnut variety that begins to bear fruit in just two years, compared to the usual 15 years for traditional walnut trees. This innovation helps farmers increase their income and make better use of their land.

Helping the Community

The Ashram plays a vital role in supporting the small community of Kashmiri Hindus who still live in the region after the mass exodus in the late 1980s. It organizes a Langar (community kitchen) during the annual Mata Kheer Bhawani festival in Ganderbal district, providing food for pilgrims. Since 1997, the Ashram has served thousands of pilgrims during this festival, starting with 400-500 in its first year. Bhat highlighted that the Ashram’s mission is to teach and promote positive values, helping humanity and building a better nation. It also offers lodging and boarding for displaced Kashmiri Hindus during their visits to religious sites, helping them reconnect with their roots and culture. The Ashram continues to conduct various programs to support the community and ensure that the traditions and values of Kashmiri Hindus are preserved.
