SVAMITVA Yojana: Empowering Rural India

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributed property cards under the SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) scheme across 10 states and two Union Territories. This initiative, which began as a pilot project in April 2020, was rolled out nationally in April 2021. Over the past few years, SVAMITVA has achieved significant success, playing a crucial role in digitizing land records for the farming community and rural residents.

Transforming Lives in Villages

The SVAMITVA yojana is bringing about positive changes in rural India by providing accurate property ownership data. This has empowered villagers by clarifying land ownership, reducing disputes, and creating better opportunities for them. Before this initiative, many rural households lacked formal land documentation, which often led to conflicts and uncertainty regarding land ownership.

In just 3.5 years, the scheme has made remarkable strides, covering nearly 92 percent of villages. As of December 2024, drone surveys under the SVAMITVA scheme have been completed in 3.17 lakh villages, resulting in the issuance of 2.19 crore property cards for approximately 1.49 lakh villages. This includes regions like Lakshadweep, Ladakh, Delhi, and several states like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Turning Disputes into Solutions

The SVAMITVA scheme has transformed rural life by turning land disputes into solutions. Previously, farmers struggled without legal titles for their land, making it difficult to secure loans. With the introduction of SVAMITVA, villagers now have clear property ownership, allowing them to use their land as collateral. This change has opened doors to financial freedom and investment in agriculture, driving economic growth in rural communities.

Furthermore, the scheme has helped local governments improve property tax collection by providing accurate records. This has boosted revenue for Gram Panchayats, facilitating rural development. Women, who often faced challenges in claiming property rights, now receive legal ownership documentation through SVAMITVA. This empowerment promotes gender equality and strengthens the economic standing of women in rural areas.
