In 2015, Alia Mariam’s world was turned upside down when she learned that her one-year-old son, Ayaan, was born with cerebral palsy, an incurable condition affecting the brain. Despite initial support from her family, she soon found herself alone in her struggle to provide the best care for her son. Undeterred, Alia made the tough decision to do everything possible for Ayaan’s treatment, even as she grappled with depression and the financial strain of raising funds through social media.
Raising Awareness and Building a community
Determined to help others in similar situations, Alia researched Ayaan’s condition extensively and sought advice from doctors. Although they offered little hope, she refused to give up. She became a social media influencer, establishing an online community for parents of children with cerebral palsy. Alia connected them with therapists and inspired them to persevere, never losing hope.
Through her Facebook page, “Cerebral Palsy/Special Kid,” Alia provided a platform for people to reach out and learn about the condition. She also ran campaigns to raise awareness about children with disabilities and their parents, working closely with NGOs and visiting various places, including Shimla.
Multitasking for a Brighter Future
Alia’s unwavering dedication to Ayaan’s well-being led her to explore multiple avenues to fund his therapy, which costs Rs 15,000 per week and is a lifelong necessity. She started a YouTube channel, “Alia Cookbook,” and wrote a cookbook on Mughlai food. In 2022, she even participated in the famous reality show MasterChef on Sony TV, utilizing every opportunity to raise funds for Ayaan’s treatment.
Despite the challenges, Alia remains steadfast in her commitment to her son’s progress. Ayaan, who initially faced difficulties with movement and balance, can now sit with support and has started rolling and crawling, thanks to his mother’s relentless efforts.
