Showkat Ahmad Lone: Revolutionizing Sozni Art with Portrait Embroidery

Kashmiri artisan Showkat Ahmad Lone masters Sozni embroidery, innovating by creating intricate portraits on Pashmina shawls, revolutionizing the traditional craft after 20 years' dedication.

Showkat Ahmad Lone, hailing from Ganderbal in Kashmir, has become a true master of the traditional Sozni art form. For over 20 years, he has dedicated himself to this craft, which involves intricate embroidery on Pashmina shawls. But Showkat isn’t just preserving tradition – he’s revolutionizing it.

Sozni work typically features patterns of flowers, leaves, and other designs. However, Showkat has taken this art to new heights by creating detailed portraits of famous personalities on these prized shawls. His skill with needle and thread is so refined that he can capture the likeness of people with incredible accuracy.

From Bollywood to Politics: A Canvas of Faces

Showkat’s work spans a wide range of subjects. He has crafted portraits of Bollywood icons like Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn, bringing the glamor of cinema to the traditional Kashmiri shawl. But his art doesn’t stop at entertainment. Showkat has also immortalized political leaders and important figures in Indian society.

One of his most striking pieces features images of Lord Ram and Sita on one side of a shawl, with the Taj Mahal on the other. This beautiful creation showcases not only Showkat’s skill but also his ability to blend different cultural elements in his work.

Reviving a Dying Art

Showkat’s journey into Sozni art began at home. He watched his father and grandfather practice this craft and decided to learn it himself. However, he soon realized that the traditional art form was slowly dying out. This realization sparked a desire in Showkat to breathe new life into Sozni work.

“I saw that in the past 20 years, there hadn’t been much change in this craft,” Showkat explains. “So I thought, why not transform it into an innovative art form?” This led him to experiment with portraiture, a bold move that has set his work apart and drawn much attention to this traditional craft.

Recognition and Awards

Showkat’s innovative approach and exceptional skill have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, he was honored with a UT (Union Territory) award, recognizing his contribution to Kashmiri art and culture. This award is a testament to the impact Showkat has made in reviving and transforming Sozni work.

But for Showkat, the real reward is seeing his art appreciated and the tradition continuing. He hopes that his work will inspire more young people to take up this craft and keep it alive for future generations.

Call for Support and Recognition

Despite his success, Showkat believes more can be done to support artisans like himself. He calls for the government and relevant departments to create platforms that would help showcase and promote their work.

“If the government could provide a platform for artisans like us, many more people would join this craft,” Showkat says. He believes this support would not only help preserve the art form but also provide livelihoods to many skilled workers.
