Beware of Ultra-Processed Foods: They Can Make You Age Faster

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) include things like chips, biscuits, sausages, burgers, soft drinks, and quick noodles. These foods are made in factories and often contain ingredients that you wouldn’t usually use in home cooking, such as hydrogenated oils and high-fructose corn syrup. Eating too many of these things can be harmful to your health.

Study Findings on Biological Age

A new study from Monash University in Australia looked at how UPFs change our biological age. Biological age is a way to measure how healthy a person is based on certain biological markers. It can be different from chronological age, which is how old you are in years. The study featured 16,055 participants from the US, ages 20 to 79. Researchers found that for every 10% rise in UPF consumption, a person’s biological age rose by about 2.4 months. This means that if you eat a lot of UPFs, you may age faster than your real age.

Risks of Eating Too Many UPFs

The study showed that people who ate the most UPFs (68-100% of their diet) were biologically 0.86 years older than those who ate the least (39% or less of their diet). Dr. Barbara Cardoso, a nutritional biochemist and senior lecturer at Monash University, stressed the value of eating more unprocessed and slightly processed foods. She warned that for every 10% rise in energy intake from UPFs, there is nearly a 2% higher risk of dying and a 0.5% higher risk of getting chronic diseases over two years.

In conclusion, it is important to be careful about how much ultra-processed food you eat. Choosing healthy, less processed options can help you keep a younger biological age and lower health risks.
