The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formulated a detailed framework for the implementation of skill based courses and micro qualifications in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). To enhance the quality of the implementation, Best Practice Guidelines for this initiative are complemented by Standard Operating Procedures. UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said that these guidelines are a revolutionary step to enhance the framework of NEP 2020 goals.
UGC Proposals to match education with the requirements of today’s working world
According to Kumar, this guidelines’ primary purpose lies in imparting firsthand experience of the field and preparing the students to enable them to have the best experience in their studies and academic endeavors. He posed the need to anticipate how job market requirements are likely to transform, which is necessary to harmonise with a knowledge economy, so that youth from India can produce productive and competent human capital for this economy. India being a country with a youth productive population there is a belief that India has the demographic capital that is capable of transforming its fortunes economically and politically. However, improving and even transforming the role of higher education capacity to perform these tasks require the integration of higher education into the new needs of societies and industries.
The Emerging Fields Knowledge Integration into Curriculum
The UGC has set out guidelines for education that encourage closing the gap between formal knowledge given in the classroom and skills required in business environments. Skilled based courses and micro credentials offer avenues through which the HEIs may expose students to exciting career destinations like: Artificial intelligence, Data analysis, Digital Marketing, Literary Journalism, Conflict solution, digital advocacy, supply chain management and logistics, sustainable agriculture, Digital payments, Fashion marketing, E- commerce among others. Kumar also pointed out that mastery of these areas will help the students to embark on self employment or to take the chance on the new jobs opening up in the increasingly technological and environmentally friendly world economy.
