Academy of Shariat and Advanced Studies: Bridging Cultures through Education

In India, many educational institutions are run by Muslim organisations, focusing on Islamic teachings, laws, and Hadith. However, the Academy of Shariat and Advanced Studies (ASAS) in Thrissur, Kerala, stands out. This academy is unique because its principal, Onampilly Muammad Faizy, is a Sanskrit scholar from Sri Sankara University in Kalady, the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya. At ASAS, students learn not only Islamic texts but also Sanskrit and Vedantic literature, making it a special place for education.

Unique Curriculum

ASAS was started eight years ago by Samastha, a group of Sufi Sunni Muslim scholars. The principal redesigned the curriculum to include Sanskrit as a compulsory subject. Students join the academy after completing grade X through an entrance test. They study Islamic studies at the intermediate, degree, and postgraduate levels, with Sanskrit included in their courses. This raises important questions: Why teach Sanskrit in an Islamic institution? Is there interest in this subject? Are there any objections from students or parents?

Embracing Diversity in Education

Currently, there are about 100 students at ASAS. When asked if there are any objections to learning Sanskrit, Onampilly explains that it is just another academic subject. He believes that knowledge and awareness lead to understanding. He also highlights that learning a language is about understanding the culture it represents. To teach Sanskrit, he has three Hindu teachers, which helps break down cultural barriers.

Onampilly points out that the current education system often lacks values and dharma. He argues that schools should not avoid teaching religious philosophies just because of India’s diversity. He believes that if ASAS can successfully integrate these teachings, other schools should also consider doing the same. His vision is to provide students with a rich understanding of various faiths and cultures, fostering a more inclusive and aware society.
