Arif Bamane: Hero of Mumbai boat collision rescue mission

On December 18 a fatal mishap occurred at the Gateway of India. A Navy speedboat rammed a one the and local passenger ferries known as ‘Neel Kamal’. This accident has raised many people’s rates of anxiety and depression. It was not only filled with people who were drowning and shouting for help. Unfortunately, 13 lives were lost; 115 individuals were saved.

Arif Bamane’s Quick Action

Arif Bamane, a middle-aged man and a master of a commercial boat, was one of the first to respond. Once he got the signal, he went to the scene of the accident, with his boat named Porwa. He was able, therefore, to accomplish the distance in 8 min only, whereas it used to be 18-20 min in normal circumstances. On arrival, he realised that what he saw was horrific. The individuals were flailing in the water, some with life jackets while others without. Some were lifting their hands, seeking assistance, from their directors.

Gathering his team Arif immediately initiated the process of rescuing them. He pointed to the hopes of non-evacuated stokers saving women and children first. Arif said, ‘A three-year-old girl was dead and I saw her lying flat on the water.’ Her lungs became filled with water. He also came across a newborn baby that was born dead. Surprisingly Arif immediately puts the baby upside down, and the baby begins to cry and breathe at the same time.

A Community’s Gratitude

Arif Bamane and his team managed to rescue around 30 people from the waves. He waved to women and children, picked them to his boat, gave them life jackets and boosted their morale. Others on the shore watched helplessly and hoped for the best for the casualties. The people that Arif saved depicted his actions to be miraculous.

Currently, Arif has been receiving lots of appreciation from people especially through social media and his community. He was very brave and thought fast during a bad time that had a major impact on our lives. They admit the efforts he had made, the lives he had saved in this terrible accident.
