Celebrating Kali Puja: A Symbol of Unity

In West Bengal and parts of eastern India, people celebrate Kali Puja, a festival dedicated to Goddess Kali, a fierce form of feminine power. This festival comes soon after Durga Puja and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. In places like Barasat, Kalyani, and Nai Hatti, Kali Puja is as famous as Durga Puja in Kolkata. Many people, including Muslims, come from far and wide to witness the celebrations. The festival is marked by vibrant rituals, decorations, and community gatherings, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region and the spirit of togetherness among different communities.

Rizwan Ahmed Siddiqui: A Unifying Force

Rizwan Ahmed Siddiqui, affectionately known as Mama, has been organising Kali Puja for 25 years in Grant Lane, near Lal Bazar, Kolkata. He accepts voluntary donations to cover the festival’s expenses, ensuring that everyone can participate without any pressure to contribute. Rizwan believes in the joy that this festival brings to his Hindu friends and works closely with them to organise the event. Beyond the puja, he also engages in social work, helping the poor by distributing clothes and assisting in the weddings of underprivileged girls throughout the year, fostering goodwill and unity in the community.

A Community Celebration

Kali Puja is a three-day festival, with two days dedicated to the rituals and the third day reserved for a Bhandara, a community feast. Rizwan’s colleagues and friends help him organise this feast, which brings people together. The festival has a rich history, starting from a time when local boys faced challenges but continued to celebrate Kali Puja despite disruptions. Rizwan’s efforts have created a strong bond among the community members, who eagerly anticipate the festival each year. His office also serves as a hub for social work, providing free medical services and support to those in need, further strengthening community ties.
