Two years ago, a young woman in a hijab became famous on social media for directing traffic in Mumbra, a Muslim-majority area in Mumbai. This woman is Marzia Shanu Pathan. During Ramadan, she and her friends help manage traffic late into the night, sometimes until 2 AM. Their efforts to keep the streets safe have made Marzia a beloved figure in her community.
Dedicated Social Worker
Marzia is not just known for her traffic work; she is also a passionate social worker. She speaks out for underprivileged and minority groups. Recently, she was appointed as the National Working President of the Nationalist Student Congress, a group linked to the National Congress Party led by Sharad Pawar. Marzia is recognized as a spirited activist in Thane and is the daughter of Ashraf Shanu Pathan, a former leader in the Thane Municipal Corporation. Together, they have worked on important issues like water management, waste disposal, health care, and women’s safety.
Fighting for Education Rights
Through her organisation, MSP Care Foundation, Marzia started her journey in social work. She actively represents student concerns and organises programs to educate young people about the Constitution. Under her leadership, Mumbra hosts monthly eye-checkup camps that provide free cataract surgeries for senior citizens. Recently, there was controversy when the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) suggested stopping funding for madrasas and tracking student attendance. This caused a national debate, but the Supreme Court paused the NCPCR’s recommendation.
In response, Marzia worked hard to protect madrasa education. She created videos explaining the importance of funding and traditional teaching methods in madrasas, which quickly went viral. Her efforts come at a crucial time, as her new role in the Nationalist Student Congress could significantly impact the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. Marzia Shanu Pathan continues to inspire many with her dedication to her community and her fight for education rights.
