Mohammad Akbar Khan: From Budgam’s Streets to National Glory

Mohammad Akbar Khan’s journey is not only about winning gold; it is about overcoming boundaries, encouraging the next generation, and giving back to the community that formed him.

Mohammad Akbar Khan’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Akbar grew up in an area affectionately known as the “Cycle Hub” of Kashmir, born and reared in the little hamlet of Chak-e-Kawoosa in Budgam, Jammu & Kashmir. This area has produced several local, national, and even worldwide cyclists representing Kashmir. Akbar developed a passion for riding early on after seeing older lads from his hometown speed around the little alleys on their colourful bikes. Akbar started riding professionally in 2006 while still a Social Birds High School student. Despite few means, his family encouraged his aspirations, and he quickly became a recognisable sight at every local bicycle event.

Mohammad Akbar Khan’s path of learning was as decided as his athletic one. After finishing his 11th and 12th from Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Magam, he entered Amar Singh College, Srinagar. It was here that his riding career truly took off. He blended his education with intense exercise, frequently rising before dawn to practice. Following a Bachelor’s in Physical Education from Government Degree College Ganderbal, he completed his Masters under an exceptional sports quota at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The narrative of Akbar provides evidence of how anybody may transcend their situation and reach glory using passion, diligence, and tenacity.

Rising Through the Ranks: The Making of a Champion

Mohammad Akbar Khan’s riding path is loaded with achievements that highlight his tireless energy. He began by winning medals at the school and college levels, swiftly building his reputation in local events. At Amar Singh College, he acquired his first sponsored bicycle with the help of Professor Mashook and a tie-up with J&K Bank. This new bike became his valued buddy, letting him train harder and perform better. Akbar’s effort paid off as he won five gold medals in inter-college tournaments and often represented Kashmir University in inter-university championships.

In 2016 and 2017, Akbar represented Guru Nanak Dev University in the All India Inter-University Cycling Championship, winning two additional gold medals and bringing glory to his university and his native state. Notably, in 2016, he got a high-quality racing bike as a present from the then Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Omar Abdullah—a gesture that further enhanced his morale and performance. Akbar’s journey from the alleys of Budgam to the national stage is a brilliant example of tenacity and self-belief.
