Nahoum: A Delectable Slice of Kolkata’s Heritage

Nahoum, a century-old bakery nestled in the heart of Kolkata’s New Market, embodies the city’s diverse cultural tapestry. Established by a Jewish family from Baghdad, this iconic establishment has Muslim bakers. It attracts a diverse clientele, including Christians, Hindus, and people from all walks of life, who flock to savour its delectable offerings.

A Legacy of Passion and Craftsmanship

The story of Nahoum dates to 1847 when Nahoum Israel Mordecai, a Jewish immigrant from Baghdad, arrived in Kolkata (then Calcutta) and started selling baked goods and cheese door-to-door. His love for baking eventually led him to open a small shop in New Market around 1897. Over the years, the business flourished, and Nahoum’s delicacies became a beloved part of Kolkata’s culinary heritage.

A Treat for All Senses

Stepping into Nahoum’s is like taking a journey through time. The aroma of freshly baked treats fills the air, and the display cases showcase a mouthwatering array of cakes, brownies, fudges, jams, almond tarts, and the famous plum cakes. Each bite is a testament to the bakery’s commitment to preserving its authentic recipes and techniques passed down through generations.

From the rich Christmas plum cake to the decadent walnut cake, Choco-chip brownies, rum balls, and lemon tarts, Nahoum’s offerings are an actual work of art. The bakery also boasts a variety of Savoury delights, such as chicken patties, fish rolls, and Madeira cakes, catering to diverse taste buds.

During Christmas, Nahoum becomes the epicenter of Kolkata’s festivities, with people lining up for hours to get their hands on the bakery’s famous Christmas cakes and goodies. Whether it’s a slice of baked delight or a heartwarming memory, Nahoum promises an experience that transcends cultural boundaries and brings people together in the shared love of delicious treats.
