Pran Kishore: A Living Legend in Kashmir’s Broadcasting and Fiction

Born amidst the vibrant streets of Mallapora, Habbakadal, in January 1925, Pran Kishore, the iconic radio personality and actor is on the verge of celebrating his centenary. Delving into his remarkable journey, this article explores the pivotal moments that shaped Pranji’s illustrious career.

Radio Kashmir: A Beginnings in War-Torn Srinagar

At the tender age of 23, Pranji stepped into the world of broadcasting, joining Radio Kashmir during India’s war in 1948. With 37 years dedicated to radio, he played a crucial role in the inception of the first two Kashmiri feature films, “Maanziraat” and “Shayar-e-Kashmir Mehjoor,” and contributed to acclaimed Indian television serials.

The Prolific Writer and Director

Beyond his captivating voice, Pranji’s literary prowess shines through. He penned numerous radio plays, authored notable works like “Gul Gulshan Gulfaam,” and showcased his directorial skills in theater, television, and films. His impact on Kashmir’s broadcasting scene is akin to the influence of iconic figures in the rest of India.

Accolades and Recognition

Pranji’s excellence was noticed. With over 2,000 radio dramas, features, and documentaries to his credit, he clinched the prestigious Akashvani Annual Award multiple times. His international acclaim reached its pinnacle when he served on the 30th PRIX ITALIA jury in Milan in 1978.

Literary Honors and Television Triumphs

A testament to his literary prowess, Pranji’s Kashmiri novel ‘Sheen Teh Watapod’ earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1989. He extended his influence to the small screen, scripting 45 episodes for Doordarshan National’s first Kashmir-centric serial, “Gul Gulshan Gulfaam.”

Return to Roots and Cinematic Contributions

Years after leaving Kashmir due to insurgency, Pranji returned, showcasing the region’s beauty through a television crew while filming a tele serial on Mughal empress Noorjehan. His directorial masterpiece, the first Kashmiri film ‘Maanziraat,’ received acclaim at the National Film Festival in 1965.

Closing Chapters

Pranji’s legacy includes directing Balraj Sahani’s biopic on Kashmir’s renowned poet, Ghulam Ahmad Mehjoor. From his theatrical debut in 1943 to receiving the Padam Shri in 2018, Pran Kishore’s journey encapsulates a lifetime dedicated to shaping Kashmir’s cultural and artistic landscape.
