Sarkari Musalmaan: The Journey of a Pro-Establishment Muslim in Contemporary India

Sarkari Musalmaan: The Life and Travails of a Soldier Educationist” is the 2018 autobiography of Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah, who refers to himself as a “Sarkari Musalmaan.”

In the book, Shah describes a Sarkari Musalmaan as a pro-establishment Muslim who defines his religion in a way that is acceptable to the government and projects himself as a modern rationalist by being submissive, or even pandering to bigotry against co-religionists.

The book tells Former Deputy Chief of the Army Staff Zameer Uddin Shah’s journey from a Madrassa to the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army and Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, offering insights into the intersection of religion and politics in contemporary India.
