Young Tennis Star Erin Mir Shines in National Championships

Erin Mir, a young tennis player from Kashmir, has achieved a significant milestone by winning her first under-16 All India Ranking Championship series nationals in Dwarka, Delhi. This victory comes after she won four national championships in just one month. Erin’s success is a proud moment for her family and her home state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Early Passion for Tennis

Erin, who hails from Srinagar, has shown a love for sports since she was just four years old. She became fascinated with tennis while watching matches on television with her father, who is a senior bureaucrat. Although he initially thought she was too young for such a demanding sport, he could not ignore her enthusiasm. Recognizing her passion, he decided to support her dream of becoming a tennis player. Her father, a sports lover himself, noticed Erin’s talent early on. He recalled how she would jump around with excitement while watching gymnastics on TV. When the family lived in Mumbai, Erin was very active and showed great potential in tennis, which led to her needing proper coaching.

Training and Success

Although Erin was too young to join a sports academy at first, she learned the basics of tennis for two years. When the family moved to Jammu during the Covid pandemic, her love for tennis continued to grow. With strong support from her family, Erin eventually moved to Delhi to train under the well-known coach Vinod Kumar. Since starting her professional training in March 2022 at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Academy, Erin has made impressive progress. She has also trained at the Ballpark Tennis Academy in Gurugram, Haryana. At just 11 years old, Erin has already made a name for herself in the national tennis scene, becoming the first girl from Jammu and Kashmir to break into the Top-20 All India Tennis Association Rankings, currently ranked at 27.
