Assamese Researcher,Rahul Islam Develops App to Detect Depression

During the joyful Durga Puja festival, news of an Assamese researcher in the United States has brought even more happiness to the people of Assam. Rahul Islam, who works at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, has created a mobile app that can identify people suffering from depression. This app can scan a person’s face and eyes to understand their mental state.

Rahul’s Journey from Assam to the USA

Rahul Islam is from Radhakuchi village in the Kamrup district of Assam. He graduated in Computer Science Engineering from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Guwahati, and received a scholarship to study in the USA. He is currently researching under Senior Professor Sang Won Bae at Stevens Institute, one of the oldest universities in the United States, established in the 1870s. Rahul’s father, Golmahmood Ali, served as a soldier in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Due to his father’s job, Rahul attended several Kendriya Vidyalayas across India. He excelled in his studies, topping the North East with 97% in the 2010 High School Leaving Certificate Examination.

Innovative Apps to Help Identify Depression

In an interview, Golmahmood Ali expressed his pride in Rahul’s achievements, noting that his son has always been a keen reader. He shared that Rahul visits home every December and returns to the USA in January. Depression is often called a silent killer and poses a serious threat to mental health. Early identification of depression is crucial for helping those affected. However, it is challenging to recognize depression in its early stages because many people hide their feelings and do not show their struggles on their faces.

At the Stevens Institute of Technology, researchers have developed two mobile apps that use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect depression. The first app measures changes in the size of the eyeballs, which can indicate brain function in depressed patients. The second app, called FacePsy, analyzes facial muscle movements and emotional states to identify those suffering from depression. Rahul’s innovative work has already been published in various scientific journals in the United States and featured in Indian media.
