Hindu Man’s Lifelong Dedication to Muharram in Delhi

Jagdish Prasad, originally from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, has participated in Muharram processions since childhood. Now living in Block 27, Trilok Puri, East Delhi, he eagerly awaits the Islamic New Year 1446 Hijri and the month of Muharram. Prasad helps make Tazias and joins the Ashura procession, mainly observed by Shia Muslims.

Prasad says, “I’ve never made any distinction between Hindus and Muslims. I grew up among Muslims. Every festival has been a source of happiness for me.” His father, Kishan Lal, encouraged this inclusive attitude.

Building Community Bonds in Trilok Puri

After moving to Delhi in 1990, Prasad noticed a small Imambara opposite his house. Over time, it grew larger, and so did the Ashura procession. Prasad, along with friends Ravi and Qasim Ali, began collecting donations to make a big Tazia. Initially, few people donated, but now about 50 families contribute.

In Trilok Puri’s Block 27, with few Shia Muslim households, the Tazia is carried by Shia, Sunni, and Hindu communities together. Prasad helps make Tazias using bamboo sticks, just as he did in his village.

Growth of Muharram Processions in Trilok Puri

Intezar Hussain, head of the Muharram Committee of Trilok Puri Block 27 and a Crime Branch Inspector says Muharram processions started here in 1980. Initially, with few Shia residents, only observances were held. Gradually, a small procession began, which grew as more people joined.

Hussain emphasises, “We don’t play any games in the procession. We take it out peacefully.” He adds that people from all communities have helped expand their Imambara, showcasing the area’s spirit of unity and respect for diverse traditions.
