India’s Inclusive Hajj Mission: A Reflection of Unity in Diversity

India’s Hajj Mission, the largest diplomatic endeavor abroad, is a testament to the nation’s rich diversity and religious harmony. In a remarkable display of unity, officers and volunteers from various ministries and the Hajj Committee of India, cutting across Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian faiths, work tirelessly to ensure a memorable pilgrimage experience for Indian Muslims.

Crossing Religious Boundaries

According to Liaquat Ali Afaqi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Hajj Committee of India, the presence of officers from diverse religious backgrounds is the most beautiful aspect of the Hajj mission. It reflects India’s civilization, culture, values, and inherent religious tolerance and harmony. Afaqi praised former Minister for Minorities Affairs, Smriti Irani, for her extensive knowledge about the Hajj and her efforts to integrate technology into the pilgrimage process.

Seamless Coordination and Dedication

Afaqi highlighted the crucial roles played by various officials, including Secretary of the Ministry of Minority Affairs Katithala Srinivas, Joint Secretary (Hajj) CPS Bakshi, and Lawrence James, a Christian member of the Hajj Committee of India. Their seamless coordination, expertise, and dedication contribute significantly to the mission’s success.

A Collaborative Effort Across Ministries

The Indian Hajj Mission is a collaborative effort involving six ministries: Home Affairs, External Affairs, Civil Aviation, Finance, Health, and the nodal Ministry of Minority Affairs. Currently, 600 personnel from the Ministry of Minority Affairs are stationed in Saudi Arabia, overseeing arrangements for Indian Hajj pilgrims.

Afaqi commended Smriti Irani’s outstanding work as the Minister of Minority Affairs, emphasizing her deep understanding of the Hajj and her commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for the pilgrims, many of whom hail from rural areas. The increased use of technology, including a mobile app, has further enhanced the pilgrimage experience for Indian Hajjis this year.

The Indian Hajj Mission exemplifies the true spirit of unity in diversity, with individuals from various faiths coming together to facilitate a sacred journey for their fellow citizens. This collective effort not only showcases India’s rich cultural tapestry but also serves as a powerful reminder of the nation’s commitment to religious tolerance and harmony.
