Jamia Millia Islamia Launches ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ Fortnight Following Successful ‘Swachhata Pakhwara’

Jamia Millia Islamia is celebrating 'Swachhata Hi Seva' from September 17 to October 1, 2024, promoting cleanliness with the theme 'Swabhav Swachhata - Sanskaar Swachhata.'

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is committed to promoting cleanliness and hygiene through various initiatives. After successfully observing ‘Swachhata Pakhwara’ from September 1 to 15, 2024, the university is now celebrating ‘Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)’ fortnight from September 17 to October 1, 2024. This year’s theme is ‘Swabhav Swachhata – Sanskaar Swachhata,’ which emphasises the importance of cleanliness as a fundamental value. These initiatives lead up to Swachh Bharat Diwas on October 2, 2024, when a ‘Swachhata ka Mela’ will also be held.

Activities During Swachhata Pakhwara

During the ‘Swachhata Pakhwara,’ JMI organised a variety of activities aimed at raising awareness about cleanliness and hygiene both on campus and in surrounding areas. The Officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Shakeel, along with faculty, staff, students, and local residents, participated in cleanliness drives. These efforts included shramdaan, where participants contributed their time and effort to clean the environment.

The university also undertook significant repairs and renovations of toilets, led by the Building & Construction Department. Mass awareness programs were conducted in JMI schools and the university, engaging local celebrities, including area MCD Councillors and the Director of Al Shifa Hospital, to promote the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. Additionally, a Swachhata Seminar was organised by the Peace Clubs and NSS units in collaboration with the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).

Engaging the Community

JMI’s commitment to cleanliness extended beyond the campus. The university organised a ‘waste to good’ exhibition in partnership with the Fine Arts Faculty and the sanitation unit. A conference titled “Green & Clean Delhi: Challenges & Prospects for Sustainable Development” was also held, focusing on sustainable practices for a cleaner environment.

To further engage the community, Swachhata rallies were conducted within the campus and nearby localities. These rallies included a Mass Swachhata Pledge and a signature campaign to encourage participation in cleanliness efforts. The Horticulture Department led plantation drives under the campaign ‘एक पेड़ मां के नाम/ Plant4Mother,’ resulting in the planting of over four thousand saplings using the Miyawaki method since July 10. An additional one thousand saplings are planned for planting in the coming days.

Creative Initiatives and Competitions

JMI also organised a painting competition centred around the theme of cleanliness. This creative initiative aimed to inspire students and participants to express their thoughts on cleanliness through art. A campaign to discourage the use of single-use plastics was launched, along with a Nukkad Natak (street play) performed by AJKMCRC, highlighting the importance of cleanliness in everyday life.

The NSS units, under the guidance of Programme Officer Dr. Abid Husain, played a crucial role in the success of these initiatives. The Sanitation Unit, led by Dr. Ayub Khan and Syed Razi Naqvi, along with the Horticulture Department, supervised by Dr. Bharat Bhushan, contributed significantly to the efforts. Dr. Mohammad Abdullah, the Nodal Person for Vector Borne Disease, also played an important role in these activities.

Looking Ahead: Swachhata Hi Seva Fortnight

As the university continues with the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ fortnight, various events are planned to further promote awareness about cleanliness and hygiene. JMI aims to reach out to nearby localities, encouraging community participation in cleanliness drives and educational programs. The university believes that these initiatives will foster a culture of cleanliness and inspire individuals to take responsibility for their environment.
