The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is adding a chapter called “Veer Abdul Hamid” to Class 6 social science books. This is part of a plan by the Defence and Education Ministries to teach students about patriotism, courage, and sacrifice. The new content also includes a poem about the National War Memorial in New Delhi.
Abdul Hamid’s Heroic Story
Abdul Hamid was born in 1933 in Uttar Pradesh. He joined the Indian Army at 20 and was posted to the 4 Grenadiers in 1955. During the 1965 Indo-Pak War, Hamid fought bravely in the Battle of Asal Uttar in Punjab’s Khemkaran sector.
On September 8, 1965, Hamid used his jeep-mounted gun to destroy four Pakistani tanks. The next day, he took out three more. On September 10, while destroying his eighth tank, Hamid was killed by enemy fire. For his incredible bravery, he was given India’s highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra, after his death.
Remembering Our Heroes
The National War Memorial, opened by PM Modi in 2019, honours soldiers who died for India. Now, the government wants to teach students about this memorial and heroes like Abdul Hamid. They hope this will make young people feel proud of their country and want to help build it.
The story of Abdul Hamid shows how one brave person can make a big difference. He wasn’t from a rich family – before joining the army, he helped his father with stitching work. But when his country needed him, he fought with amazing courage.
By teaching about heroes like Hamid, the government wants to inspire students. They hope young Indians will learn about sacrifice, duty, and love for their country. This new chapter is a way to keep the memory of brave soldiers alive and encourage the next generation to serve India.
