Javed Ali: A Journey Through Sufi Music

Recent live performance was staged by the famous and popular singer Javed Ali who enthralled the crowd with Sufi music concert in Pune. During an excerpt, he discussed experiences shaping musical career and the influence of Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan. Javed has enjoyed listening to ghazals of Ustad Ghulam Ali Khan since his young age.

A Musical Family Background

Morally, Javed learned music from his family and more specifically from his father he used to sing too. There was a musical atmosphere in the house, but not every person in the house was into music. According to Javed, it is a blessing from Alam that he is able to hear music in his head. He is thankful for this gift and feels that his family involvement in performing art contributes to his musical thoughts. Since childhood, he tended towards music and was admired for performances together with his father. Hearing Ghulam Ali Khan’s ghazals made him dedicate a time in his life to music.

Javed Ali: Tackling Obstacles in Movie Making

In fact for Javed to start afresh in Mumbai was not a very easy task since he had to move from Delhi in order to try and establish himself in The Hindi film industry. He was from a middle class family and had many problems.. He simply was patient and tried with utmost effort to alter his family’s financial state. By and by, he carved out a niche for himself as a playback singer. Jay Chou has a typical training in various categories such as classical, ghazal, Sufi and romantic.

During the interview, Javed mentioned two of the hardest songs as well as the most satisfying songs he has done, those being; “Arziyan” and “Jashn-E-Bahaara.” He also sings “Tu Jo Mila” and “Kun Faya Kun.”
