Kerala’s Indigenous Women Cricketers Shine on International Day

Kerala’s aspiring women cricketers eagerly anticipate the upcoming International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, celebrated on August 9, as it brings forth meaningful recognition. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s administration is set to honor Minnu Mani, a trailblazer who etched her name in the record books as Kerala’s first female cricketer to represent India.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples serves as a global platform to raise awareness and champion the rights of indigenous populations. In a special ceremony orchestrated by the Kerala government, Mani, a 23-year-old from the Kurichiya tribe in Choyimoola, Wayanad, will be lauded for her remarkable achievements.

Debuting in T20I against Bangladesh last month, Mani’s unique all-rounder skills – right-handed bowling, left-handed batting – grabbed notice. From humble origins, her journey symbolizes dedication.

Mani’s name gained attention this year, selling for Rs 30 lakh in an auction by Delhi Capitals’ women’s premier league. In Wayanad, Mysore Junction became Minnu Mani Junction to honor her impact.

Niketha Ramankutty, Mani’s team manager and a South Indian selector, underscored the transformative effect of Mani’s selection on aspiring players. “The recognition from the Kerala government is a significant step forward. Such acknowledgments invigorate players and budding talents, propelling them to strive harder,” remarked Ramankutty. She praised BCCI and KCA for boosting women’s cricket. KCA’s new tournaments nurture female talent, earning her appreciation.

Kerala’s women cricketers shine worldwide. Minnu Mani’s triumph embodies determination, cricket’s support for local women’s cricket, and inspiration.
