Major Radhika Sen’s Journey to Becoming UN’s Military Gender Advocate of the Year

In a remarkable display of leadership and unwavering commitment to gender equality, Major Radhika Sen of the Indian Army has been bestowed with the prestigious United Nations Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award for 2023. This honor, presented by UN Secretary-General António Guterres himself, recognizes her outstanding service during her deployment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as part of the MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

Empowering Communities, Building Trust

Major Sen’s impact extended far beyond her military duties. As the Engagement Platoon Commander, she led a team of 20 women soldiers and 10 male soldiers, focusing on interacting with civilians, addressing the security concerns of displaced persons, and advocating for the voices of women, girls, and children in conflict zones. Through educational sessions on vital topics like women’s health, education, childcare, gender equality, and employment, coupled with skill development programs, Major Sen not only enhanced self-reliance among local populations but also built trust and facilitated effective information gathering.

A Legacy of Compassion and Inclusion

Major Sen’s achievements have left an indelible mark on the local communities in the DRC and set a high standard for future peacekeeping missions worldwide. Her efforts directly inspired women’s solidarity, providing safe spaces for meetings and open dialogue, and encouraging women to organize themselves, advocate for their rights, and amplify their voices within the community, particularly in local security and peace discussions. As a gender advocate, she fostered a safe space for men and women to operate together under her command, quickly becoming a role model for both women peacekeepers and their male counterparts.

In honoring Major Radhika Sen with this prestigious award, the United Nations has recognized not only her exceptional leadership but also her steadfast commitment to building peaceful and inclusive societies. Her achievements exemplify the values of service, integrity, and a dedication to creating a world where everyone, regardless of gender, has an equal opportunity to thrive.
