Nabab Ali: The Unsung Hero Behind Assam’s Cricket Success

Nabab Ali, fondly known as Nababda, is celebrating the inclusion of his student Riyan Parag in Team India for the Zimbabwe tour. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Assam cricket and fulfils Nababda’s long-held dream of producing an international cricketer.

Decades of Dedication to Cricket Coaching

Since 1985, Nabab Ali has been shaping young cricket talents in Assam. His coaching centre at Nehru Stadium, Guwahati, has become a breeding ground for cricketers, much like Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Over the years, Nababda has groomed more than 50 first-class players and numerous national-level cricketers.

Nababda’s journey began as a player, representing Assam in junior tournaments. He later switched to coaching after receiving training from Sports Authority of India. His dedication led to the establishment of the Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre, which now boasts 350 trainees.

Nurturing Talents and Overcoming Disappointments

Nabab Ali has coached several promising cricketers who came close to national selection. Notable among them are Syed Jakaria Zuffri, Abu Naschim Ahmed, and Parag Das (Riyan’s father). While these near-misses were disappointing, they motivated Nababda to refine his coaching methods further.

His efforts have resulted in producing India under-19 and under-17 players like Abu Naschim, Mrigen Takukdar, Polash Jyoti Das, and Sadek Imran Choudhury. However, Riyan Parag’s selection to the national team is Nababda’s crowning achievement.

Nababda recalls spotting Riyan’s talent at age eight and how former National Cricket Academy director Sandeep Patil recognized the boy’s potential. He believes Riyan’s recent form and maturity will help him establish a long career with Team India.

Nabab Ali’s story is one of perseverance and passion for cricket. His contributions to Assam cricket have finally been recognized with Riyan Parag’s selection, marking a new chapter in the state’s cricketing history.
