From Grief to Glory: Sunmbul Rahman Conquers Six World Marathons and Ladakh’s Heights

Sunmbul Rahman, 49, faced a devastating loss when her husband died of cancer in 2005, leaving her to raise two young daughters alone. By 2010, she realized she was gaining weight rapidly and decided to take up running and gym workouts. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Discovering a Passion for Running and Mountains

Sunmbul soon found herself enjoying marathons and participating in national events. Her natural talent for running became evident as she started winning prizes regularly. In 2014, during a trek to Sandakphu, guides noticed her exceptional speed and comfort at high altitudes, encouraging her to pursue mountaineering.

Inspired, Sunmbul trained further and conquered the Everest Base Camp. She then set her sights on Stok Kangri in Ladakh, the region’s highest peak. Despite its challenges, she successfully scaled it, igniting a deeper passion for mountain climbing. She has since climbed three more mountains and aims to tackle a 7000-meter peak soon.

Achieving Marathon Milestones

Sunmbul’s running achievements have been equally impressive. She qualified for the prestigious Boston Marathon in 2020 and is now aiming to become a six-star finisher by completing all major marathons: London, New York, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, and Tokyo. She has already secured a spot in the 2025 Boston Marathon.

Adding to her accomplishments, Sunmbul served as a 10K Pacer for the Tata TSK 2022, a renowned women’s marathon in India.

Sunmbul Rahman’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start something new. From a grieving widow to a marathon runner and mountain climber, she has transformed her life through determination and perseverance. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, proving that personal tragedies can be overcome, and new passions can be discovered at any stage of life.
