Promoting Peaceful and Inclusive Islam: Global Efforts and India’s Sufi Counter-Narrative

Efforts to reform and revitalize Islam as a narrative of peace, inclusivity, and reason have gained momentum worldwide, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by radical Islamist extremists. Various Western, Arab, and Muslim countries have endeavoured to promote moderate versions of Islam in response to global radicalism.

Examples include “Middlemost Islam” in Jordan, “Humanitarian Islam” in Morocco, “Democratic Islam” in Tunisia, and “Islam Nusantara” in Indonesia. In India, extensive intellectual and policy-based exercises have emphasized the country’s unique Islamic tradition rooted in Sufism, which has long served as a counter-narrative to religious extremism.

Sufism has emerged globally as a peaceful and spiritually-inclined strain of Islam, countering extremism and promoting peacebuilding.

Unfortunately, proponents of political Islamism have formulated an anti-pluralistic theology, justifying sectarian conflicts, faith-based violence, and terrorism.
