Gulam Nabi Dar: The Artist of Walnut Wood Carving in Kashmir

In the picturesque region of Kashmir, where the air is laden with the scent of walnut orchards, a timeless art form thrives – Walnut Wood Carving. Dating back to the 15th century, this exquisite craft has played a pivotal role in shaping Kashmir’s economy. Meet Gulam Nabi Dar, a resident of Srinagar, who has dedicated a remarkable 71 years to the intricate art of Walnut Wood Carving.

Gulam Nabi Dar’s Journey of Mastery

At the tender age of ten, Gulam Nabi Dar embarked on a journey that intertwined his destiny with the art of Walnut Wood Carving. Despite facing economic hardships that led to his premature departure from formal education, Dar found solace and purpose in honing his craft. His initiation into the world of wood carving wasn’t conventional, marked by struggles and rejection, but determination fueled his journey.

Dar reminisces, “I went to learn, and people used to push me away, saying I couldn’t learn because I used to write with my left hand upside down. That was my struggle, and I was extremely poor.” Undeterred by societal norms, Dar found a mentor who recognized his potential and taught him the nuances of the ancient art.

Preserving a Legacy

Walnut Wood Carving is not merely a craft for Dar; it’s a legacy he aims to preserve. In his pursuit of reviving this fading art, Dar draws inspiration from the intricate designs and patterns that define Kashmir’s traditional woodwork. His commitment to passing down the knowledge received from his mentors underscores the significance of preserving cultural heritage.

The Unique Essence of Walnut Wood

The Timeless Appeal of 30-Year-Old Wood

For Dar, the essence of Walnut Wood Carving lies in working with seasoned wood. He shares, “I had a 30-year-old piece of wood that I used to dry. When it dried perfectly, I would begin my work on it. This craft is exclusively for Walnut Wood.”

Navigating Environmental Challenges

The recognition of Kashmir’s Walnut Wood Carving on UNESCO’s 2021 Craft and Folk Art List has brought renewed hope for artisans. However, challenges persist, especially concerning the procurement of walnut wood. The Wood Cuting Act of 1969 imposes restrictions on cutting walnut trees, necessitating approval from the Revenue Officer. This bureaucratic process adds significant time and effort to the production of each piece.

Dar expresses gratitude for his craft, stating, “I am very happy with my work. When I feel unwell and stay in my room, I get sicker. But when I go to the workshop, I feel better. It’s not an ordinary job.”

Crafting Masterpieces: Designs and Awards

Panchayat Design and Award-Winning Box

Dar’s creativity extends beyond traditional pieces to modern interpretations. Notably, he designed the Panchayat, showcasing religious harmony by featuring individuals from different faiths. Additionally, he crafted a box, his first award-winning piece. Recalling the moment, Dar says, “For the State Award, I submitted this box. At that time, Gulam Mohammad Shah Vazir-e-Aalam was there, and he gave me the award. I felt like I had achieved something. After that, I made a conscious effort to learn more.”

The Walnut Wood Carving Process

Choice of Wood Matters

In Kashmiri tradition, only trees that don’t bear fruit are used for crafting furniture. This careful selection ensures the preservation of orchards while also maintaining the integrity of the craft.

Time-Intensive Creation

The time required for crafting varies based on the complexity of the item. A small box may take a minimum of 10 days to complete, while larger, more intricate pieces demand additional time and expertise.
