In 1902, Agha Khan spoke about the need for a Muslim university, emphasising the creation of university towns with their own traditions. At Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), these traditions, known as “tehzeeb” in Urdu, play a crucial role in shaping the character of students. They are not just rules but essential values that help students grow into respectful and polished individuals.
Learning Through Experience
When students join AMU, they learn these traditions from seniors, especially during a practice called “intro.” This practice was stopped in 2007 due to anti-ragging laws, but it was a way for seniors to teach newcomers important etiquettes. For example, students are taught to greet everyone, especially elders, as a sign of respect. They also learn to stand up against harassment and to dress formally in public spaces, which helps build a strong personality.
A Holistic Education
The traditions at AMU go beyond academics. They include how to behave in social situations, interact with different people, and show respect to others. Teachers at the engineering college often mention that while students at other institutions focus only on technical skills, AMU students learn about culture and social life alongside their studies. This unique blend of education and tradition is what makes AMU special.
The Principal of M. A. O. College, Theodore Morrison, highlighted in 1893-94 that the moral and intellectual environment of the college is more important than exam results. He expressed concern about the changing traditions as more students joined from different backgrounds. He believed that maintaining these traditions was essential for the character development of students. The traditions at AMU are vital for personal growth and social skills. They help students become well-rounded individuals, preparing them for life beyond the university.
