A New Look for Lady Justice at the Supreme Court

In a move to move away from colonial influences, the statue of Lady Justice in the judges’ library of the Supreme Court of India has undergone a significant change. Instead of holding a sword, she now holds a copy of the Indian Constitution. Additionally, her blindfold has been removed, allowing her to see with open eyes. This change, made during the leadership of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, sends a strong message: the law in India is not blind and is not just about punishment.

Meaning Behind the Changes

Traditionally, the blindfold on Lady Justice represented equality before the law. It meant that justice should not be affected by a person’s wealth, status, or power. The sword symbolised authority and the ability to punish wrongdoers. By replacing these symbols, the new Lady Justice shows that the law treats everyone equally, as stated in the Constitution. The focus is now on the power of the Constitution rather than the power of punishment.

Keeping the Balance

Despite these changes, Lady Justice still holds the scales of justice in her right hand. This symbolises the importance of balance in society and the need to carefully consider facts and arguments from both sides before making a decision.

Recently, President Droupadi Murmu also unveiled a new flag and insignia for the Supreme Court to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Under Chief Justice Chandrachud’s leadership, the Supreme Court has started live-streaming important court proceedings on YouTube. They have also begun using artificial intelligence and natural language processing to transcribe these hearings in real time. This has allowed many people to watch significant cases, such as those related to NEET-UG and R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, gaining a better understanding of the judicial process. These changes reflect a modern approach to justice in India, emphasising transparency and equality for all.
