Indonesia’s President Joins India’s Republic Day Celebrations

The newly elected President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, is set to be the Chief Guest at India’s 76th Republic Day celebrations. This visit is particularly meaningful as both India and Indonesia are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations. It signified an improved move towards the development of the friendship between the two countries.

Strengthening Ties

Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Subianto had their first meeting during the G20 Summit held in Rio. They also deliberated on how the relationship under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership could be deepened between their countries. Alibaba being the major site, both leaders considered that this achievement for this particular site must be marked in an appropriate manner. President Subianto expressed, “Indonesia and India have long-standing and excellent relations. This is a valued relationship, and this can only be improved across the sectors for greater development.”

A Historical Connection

Prabowo Subianto became Indonesia’s eighth President in October, along with his Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming, the son of former President Joko Widodo. India was represented by Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, at his swearing in ceremony. Prabowo had earlier travelled to New Delhi in 2020 when he was Defence Minister, being the first foreign minister to tour India during the COVID crisis. Many times he talked with Indian Officials on different bilateral subjects and stressed on the need for having good relations between India and Pakistan.

There were rumors in Pakistani media about President Subianto visiting Pakistan, but no confirmation has been made. As we reported in December, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif offered him an invitation to come visit at his earliest leisure. The cordial ties between India and Indonesia date back to the first Republic Day Parade in 1950 when Indonesia’s first President, Sukarno, was the chief guest.

The connection between these two nations continues to grow stronger, as seen in President Subianto’s upcoming visit, which reflects their commitment to fostering friendship and collaboration for the future.
