Insights on India-China Relations: A Way Forward under Modi 3.0

On PM Modi’s re-election, the exchange of congratulatory messages between him and the Taiwanese President raised concerns in Beijing. However, India’s longstanding ‘One China’ policy, which does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, remains intact. China’s muted response and the swift removal of the report from its Foreign Ministry’s website indicate a mature understanding of such exchanges, avoiding unnecessary tensions in India-China relations.

Border Dispute Resolution: A Challenging Endeavor

Resolving the India-China border dispute, which involves territorial claims over 130,000 square kilometres of land, is a complex and daunting task. The terrain’s rugged nature, the lack of official historical records, and the differing perspectives between the two nations contribute to the challenges. However, their shared commitment to a peaceful resolution, codified in numerous agreements since the 1990s, and their efforts to maintain peace and tranquillity in border areas provide hope for a potential solution.

Reviving Informal Summits: A Path to Reconciliation

In his previous tenures, PM Modi initiated informal summits with President Xi Jinping in Wuhan and Mamallapuram, which yielded concrete outcomes amid heightened tensions. The revival of these innovative summits remains crucial for resolving border tensions and fostering reconciliation between India and China. While the absence of a Chinese Ambassador in India for 18 months until May 2023 reflected a recalcitrant posture, the appointment of a new ambassador should create positive vibes for improved mutual interactions and potential informal summit discussions.

The complex nature of India-China relations demands a nuanced approach, balancing firmness on core issues with a willingness to engage in dialogue and diplomacy. PM Modi’s leadership and the potential revival of informal summits offer a way forward in navigating these challenges and fostering stability in the region.
