Islamic University Of Science And Technology Hosts A Captivating Two-Day Film Fest

The Islamic University of Science and Technology recently commenced a remarkable two-day film festival. The prestigious event, organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in collaboration with Film South Asia and the Hri Institute, is scheduled for June 14th-15th, 2023. Dignitaries such as Prof. Shakil A. Romshoo, the IUST Vice Chancellor, and Ms. Laxmi Murthy, the Hri Institute Director, graced the inaugural function.

A Gathering of Media Enthusiasts

The event saw an impressive turnout of students and faculty members from various media departments, including MERC University of Kashmir, Department of Convergent Journalism Central University of Kashmir, Govt. Degree College Anantnag, Govt. Degree College Baramulla, Govt. College for Women M.A. Road, and Islamic University of Science and Technology. Their collective participation added vibrancy and diversity to the film fest, fostering an atmosphere of learning and creative exchange.

Shakil A Romshoo Emphasizes the Power of Film

Prof. Shakil A Romshoo emphasized the influential role of films in depicting society and their potential to drive Sustainable Development. Highlighting the power of cinema in addressing global challenges like climate change, the Vice Chancellor unveiled The Echo publication and a teaser of the audio program Peshkadam. These initiatives aim to raise awareness and promote individual and collective action on Sustainable Development Goals, particularly within the context of the G20.

Laxmi Murthy on the Art of Storytelling through Film

Ms. Laxmi Murthy eloquently discussed the transformative power of art, literature, and films in captivating audiences worldwide. She emphasized the ability of cinema to transcend borders and cultures, serving as a powerful catalyst for community upliftment.

Prof. Lily Want Explores the Cinematic World

Prof. Lily Want emphasized the profound influence of films on literature and praised them as an engaging medium with immense potential to impact communities. Her insights shed light on the unique role of cinema in artistic expression and social influence.

Fostering Communication Experts of Tomorrow

Dr. Mujeeb Liyakat, the In-Charge Head of DJMC, warmly welcomed the participants and highlighted the festival’s central theme—G20 and UN Sustainable Development. He shared various departmental initiatives to expose students to diverse aspects of Mass Communication, nurturing their understanding of the discipline.

Inspiring Collaborative Exchange for Social Good

Dr. Munejah Khan, the Dean of Humanities & Social Sciences, commended the department for organizing this significant film festival. She acknowledged the event’s role in facilitating the exchange of ideas and contributing to opinion-building for the betterment of society. Notable addresses were also given by Mr. Alok Adhikari, Assistant Director of Film South Asia, and Mr. Pawas Manandhar, a renowned film researcher.

Captivating Screenings and Photo-Exhibition

Three thought-provoking films, “Taangh/Longing,” “Sita ke Badalte Roop,” and “The City that Spoke to Me,” were screened as part of the festival, captivating the audience and sparking insightful post-screening discussions. A captivating photo exhibition showcased visually stunning and evocative artworks alongside the films.
