Lacipria Kangujam’s Bold Stand Against Fossil Fuels at COP28

In unprecedented courage, Lacipria Kangujam, a 12-year-old climate activist from Manipur, captivated the audience at the recent climate conference, COP28, held in Dubai. The focus of her impassioned protest was the global leaders’ apparent inaction towards discontinuing the use of fossil fuels, a primary driver of the escalating global warming crisis.

A Silent Plea: End Fossil Fuels, Secure Our Planet

Taking center stage, Lacipria raised a compelling message on her placard: “End fossil fuels. Secure our planet and our future.” The boldness of her silent protest spoke volumes, resonating with the urgency for change.

A Brave Voice Silenced

Following her impromptu appearance, Lacipria delivered a brief yet powerful speech condemning the use of fossil fuels. Her timely and courageous words garnered resounding applause from the audience. However, security guards promptly removed her from the stage, illustrating her reluctance to confront the inconvenient truth she had highlighted.

Detained for Advocacy

Expressing gratitude for Lacipria’s enthusiasm, COP28 Director-General Ambassador Majid Al Suwaidi encouraged applause but acknowledged the subsequent detention. Lacipria shared her frustration on social media, recounting a 30-minute detainment. Her “crime”? Advocating for the phasing out of fossil fuels is the very catalyst for the climate crisis.

A Young Advocate’s Plea

On her social media platform, Lacipria Kangujam pleaded for support, questioning the necessity of her suppression. As a frustrated child grappling with the immediate impact of the climate crisis, she underscored the need for solidarity over division.

A Risk Worth Taking

In a poignant statement on her decision to protest, Lacipria revealed the internal struggle, even facing opposition from her mother. Undeterred, she declared her commitment to risking her life for the sake of our planet and future generations.

Children’s Rights Violated

Drawing attention to potential rights violations, Lacipria Kangujam highlighted the contradiction with UN policies within the conference. Her advocacy shed light on the urgency of addressing fossil fuel-related issues during COP28, a gathering of 60,000 delegates from 190 countries.
