M.N. Roy: Bridging the Hindu-Muslim Divide

In 1937, M.N. Roy, a prominent figure in India’s freedom struggle, wrote “The Historical Role of Islam.” He observed that Hindus and Muslims in India had lived together for hundreds of years, yet there was little appreciation for each other’s cultures. Roy believed that Hindus had a poor understanding of Islamic history and held misconceptions about the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, leading to contempt for the Islamic religion.

Challenging Misconceptions

Roy argued that people should respect Islam as a significant social revolution of its time. While he did not believe in the divine origin of Islam or the Quran, he acknowledged that Islam played a crucial role in revolutionizing people’s mindsets and paving the way for social progress. He credited Islamic culture with promoting experimental science and rationalist philosophy, which contributed to subsequent social revolutions.

Roy challenged the notion that Islam was founded on militarism. He explained that Prophet Muhammad was a prophet of Arab merchants, and peace was essential for trade to thrive. According to Roy, persecuted heretics in India welcomed the message of Islam, which facilitated the Muslim conquest of India, similar to the factors that facilitated Muslim conquests in Persia and Christian countries.

Fostering Unity

To foster Hindu-Muslim unity in India, Roy suggested a critical investigation of the internal and external causes of the Muslim conquest. He believed this would help Hindus appreciate the constructive consequences of the Muslim conquest and enable them to overcome their hatred for the conquerors.

Roy’s book aimed to bridge the gap between Hindus and Muslims by promoting a better understanding of each other’s cultures and histories. He believed that only by acknowledging the revolutionary nature of Islam and its contribution to social progress could Hindus and Muslims overcome their prejudices and unite as a nation.
