UGC Launches “Ph.D. Excellence Citation” to Honor Exceptional Research

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the establishment of the “Ph.D. Excellence Citation” to recognize outstanding PhD research conducted in universities across India. This initiative aims to celebrate exceptional doctoral work in various fields and aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes the importance of creating and exploring new knowledge for the future of India.

Purpose and Goals

UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar explained that this initiative is designed to identify and honor exemplary research work in Indian universities. The goal is to promote a high-quality research environment and acknowledge the contributions of young researchers. The UGC plans to award 10 Ph.D. Excellence Citations each year, with two citations from each discipline, thereby encouraging diverse fields of study.

A study conducted by the UGC on Ph.D. degrees awarded from 2011 to 2018 revealed significant trends in research education. The total number of Ph.D. admissions doubled from 77,798 in 2010-11 to 1,61,412 in 2017-18. This indicates a steady growth rate of about 10 percent per year, showing an increasing interest among students in pursuing research degrees.

Eligibility Criteria,Award Ceremony and Thesis Requirements

To be eligible for the Ph.D. Excellence Citation, research scholars must have successfully defended their theses at Indian universities, including state, central, private, and deemed universities. Only universities recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) can participate in this initiative.

The UGC will present the Ph.D. Excellence Citations every year on September 5, coinciding with Teacher’s Day. To qualify for the citation, a thesis should demonstrate original thinking and innovative approaches to a specific research problem or topic. This initiative aims to foster a quality research ecosystem in India and recognize the hard work of young scholars, ultimately contributing to the nation’s goal of becoming a knowledge superpower.
