The Legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika: A Voice for Unity

Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a celebrated figure in Assamese music, believed in the power of culture to unite people. He famously said, “If I say I love my mother, do I need to show disgust for others’ mothers?” This statement reflects his belief that loving one’s own culture does not mean rejecting others. Through his music, he blended traditional Assamese folk tunes with modern rhythms, aiming to create a cultural renaissance. Dr. Hazarika wanted to connect people across different backgrounds, showing that humanity is like a web of relationships that goes beyond borders.

The Importance of Unity

Dr. Hazarika was a strong advocate for unity among people. He believed that a community that does not cherish its cultural roots cannot truly love others. He wanted the Assamese identity to shine on the global stage, warning that without skill and creativity, the Assamese risked being overlooked. He emphasised the need for the Assamese to work hard and take pride in their heritage, as this would help them gain recognition in the world.

He understood that division harms everyone and that hard work is essential for national strength. Dr. Hazarika urged the Assamese people to engage in their culture and heritage actively. He believed that without this commitment, the revival of Assamese identity would remain a distant dream.

The Spirit of the Brahmaputra

The Brahmaputra River was a significant symbol for Dr. Hazarika. He called it the “MahaBahu Brahmaputra,” representing courage and resilience. His connection to history deeply influenced his music, as he sought to define the essence of Assamese culture. He drew inspiration from historical figures like Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva and Lachit Borphukan, who promoted unity and righteousness.

In his songs, Dr. Hazarika often referenced the teachings of Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, promoting brotherhood and peace. His message was clear: violence has no place in society, and religion should inspire artistic beauty and understanding. Through his work, Dr. Hazarika left a lasting legacy of love, unity, and cultural pride for future generations.
