Embracing Interfaith Harmony: Beyond Misconceptions in Greetings

In certain circles, there exists a misconception among Muslims that extending greetings on occasions like Christmas, New Year, Diwali, and Holi is forbidden and even considered sinful. Some go as far as labeling it polytheistic or disbelief. Contrary to these notions, fostering social harmony becomes my priority, leading me to extend my greetings to people of diverse faiths.

Social Media Trends: A Deeper Look

Despite campaigns discouraging Muslims from greeting on social and religious occasions, a closer examination of social media reveals an unchanged pattern. Before Christmas, attending Friday prayers at a mosque in a non-Muslim-majority area exposed me to an Imam’s warning against congratulating people on Christmas, citing it as a sinful act.

Misguided Interpretations in Mosques

Instances of misguided interpretations arise in various mosques. An Imam in Delhi, citing the Quran, advised Muslims not to be friends with Jews and Christians, a command often taken out of context. The lack of contextual understanding can lead to misconceptions and division.

The Ripple Effect: Impact on the Youth

The influence of mosque teachings on the younger generation surfaced when my son questioned the permissibility of reciprocating Christmas greetings. This highlighted the far-reaching consequences of clerical statements on the beliefs and actions of the community.

A Call for Inclusivity

Contrary to divisive sermons, Islam promotes inclusivity and coexistence. Examples from European countries demonstrate Muslims not only offering greetings on Christmas but also engaging in charitable acts, dispelling the notion of inherent animosity.

Building Bridges: Interfaith Initiatives

Initiatives like those by Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, setting up stalls at Hindu festivals, exemplify the potential for peaceful coexistence. Sharing water, gifts, and literature bridges gaps and promotes community understanding.

Upholding the Universal Message

In conclusion, Islam’s universal message encourages coexistence, transcending narrow-minded interpretations. It calls for understanding, embracing diversity, and fostering harmony in a world where communal bonds should thrive over divisive rhetoric.
