The poignant tale of Pyare Lal, an elderly man residing alone in his family home in a South Kashmir town, has touched hearts online and within the local government. Citizen writer Tanveer Ahmad, brought attention to Pyare Lal’s situation. He had been living in bad conditions in the Aamno village in Kulgam district for more than thirty years. When Tanveer saw how badly Pyare Lal’s once-grand house was falling apart, he posted a video on social media that caused a lot of worry and calls for help.
Unwavering Support for the Community
Through Pyare Lal’s story, we can see how compassionate and human the Kashmiri people really are. Even though it was hard to live alone after the Kashmiri Pandits left the Valley more than 30 years ago, Pyare Lal found comfort in the constant support of his community. Prompted by Umesh Talashi, a Kashmiri Pandit activist, and pushed by Tanveer Ahmad’s popular video, locals gathered together to aid Pyare Lal.
Intervention and recovery by the government
District Magistrate Athar Aamir Khan, touched by Pyare Lal’s upsetting living conditions, personally acted to offer a helping hand. Despite offers to move to a senior citizens’ home for better care, Pyare Lal adamantly refused to leave his beloved house. Because Khan knew how attached Pyare Lal was, he made sure that his home had all the fixes it needed and all the things it needed, like regular checkups with the doctor, food, and bathrooms. The community worked together and got help from the government to recover Pyare Lal’s honour and health. This shows how powerful kindness and unity can be in hard times.
