A Message of Respect Regarding All Religions and Universal Brotherhood

Islam, a religion practised worldwide and has a long history of interactions with people of other faiths, strongly emphasises the notion that other religions should be respected & accepted and also promoting universal brotherhood. The Quran provided a chapter (Chapter 2, verse 62) emphasising that redemption is available to all individuals who believe in God and do good works, regardless of their religious affiliation. This verse was revealed when the Prophet Muhammad contacted Jewish and Christian populations in Medina. In this way, Islam demonstrates its active embrace of the truth value found in other religions and the potential of redemption outside of Islam.

Considering the Prophets and Religions from the Perspective of Islam: The Unity of the Divine Message

There are many distinct faiths, but Islam recognises them as local adaptations of a universal truth. This truth is made plain through the numerous prophets sent to different populations at different times and places. When it comes to religion, the Quran places a strong emphasis on unity and forbids disrespectful behaviour towards different faiths (6:109). According to the teachings of Islam, salvation is not dependent on a particular belief but rather is founded on the performance of virtuous actions and moral behaviour, as stated in verse 2:177.

Promoting Pluralism and Peace: Islam’s Call for Universal Brotherhood

In verse 42:8, Islam encourages the concept that the existence of a wide variety of religious ideas is both a manifestation of divine wisdom and a test for humanity. Rather than fostering religious chauvinism, Islam stands for equality and pluralism, acknowledging that all faiths go to the same end. This inclusive approach develops love, respect, and a feeling of global brotherhood among individuals of various religions, mirroring the teaching of Imam Ali about viewing others as equals in creation.

In essence, the attitude that Islam has towards other faiths goes beyond simple tolerance; it is founded on respect, acceptance, and a common pursuit of goodness and peace among all individuals, regardless of the religious connections that they may have.
